My New Graphic Design Program

This week I began a certificate at the The Illinois Institute of Art — Chicago in Image Manipulation and Design. I will learn how to use Photoshop in the program and hope to be able to obtain a job once I get the certificate. I will enjoy the program and feel it is a very good supplement to my political science degree.

It is a challenge to adapt to using Macintosh computers rather than PCs, but I will manage. I just have to remember to use the command key instead of the control key when using keyboard commands.

DePaul CTI approaches education differently

The School of Computer Science, Telecommunications, & Information Systems at DePaul university has an interesting approach to in classroom and distance education; it is called Course OnLine (COL) or the Distance Learning Web. The interface which is only available to CTI students is much better than the Blackboard technology that all other departments use to provide online content to students.

COL has a very userfirendly interface that allows the student to choose what to view and also provides a place for audio and video of all lectures to be posted about 2 hours after class. There are also cameras on the desk that allow the professor to show students what is on the desk that cannot be projected on to a screen. The screen is also recorded so the student has access to the slides shown in class. The whiteboard also has semsors that record everything that is written on the surface so we have access to the discussion notes after class. These are the features that make it better than Blackboard.

Now like Blackboard you can post syllabi, documents and notes, there is a chat/discussion forum, and a way to contact classmates and the professor. The professor can also post supplemental links.

Settled in and back in School

I have been very busy for the past few weeks. I moved from temporary quarters to my permanent apartment. I have been running around to get the apartment fixed up because the previouos occupants left it a mess and many things were damaged. My three roomates moved in and we went shopping and other things to make the apartment home.

I started school the other day. I have two computer classes and a religion class, all general education credits. I flipped by degree and already did most of my major courses. I am hoping to learn more about web design and graphic design. I also have an interest in history and theology. My schedule is as follows:

GPH 211 Perceptual Principles in a Digital Environment
10:10-11:40AM MW

HCI 201 Multimedia and the World Wide Web
3:10-4:40 PM MW

REL 233 Ibtroduction to the New Terstament
10:10-11:40 TTH

These are going to be interesting classes.

Still in Temporary quarters

It is now Monday and I moved in Saturday. I am still in temporary quarters. I was originally placed in tep quarters because the students who were in the room I was supposed to get weren’t out when they were supposed to be.

I am survivng but bored without my TV and computer. I have to go to the school computer lab, which isn’t too bad because the school is about two blocks away from the University Center. I want my computer and TV.

I just want to move into my apartment so I can unpack and oganize my stuff for the start of the school year.

Moving This Weekend
